A “CASABLANCA” Evening of Great Food, Wine & Entertainment!

We would be delighted to have you participate in a wonderful evening event, the 21st ANNUAL BLACKHAWK FOOD, WINE AND FILM FESTIVAL on Thursday, May 5th,  2011 beginning at 5:30 pm at the Blackhawk Auto Museum.

Our primary motivating force, “Service Above Self”, is to give back to the community and to help those in need.  Your generous participation and that of our sponsors provides us with the resources to undertake more projects in our community than ever before.

We are proud and honored to have had the Livermore Valley Wineries as our exclusive wines and as a partner in the fundraiser.  You will have an unforgettable gourmet experience, sampling the wares of over two dozen of the area’s best restaurants and a like number of Livermore Valley wineries.  The festivities include a fun raffle, and silent and live auctions.  Throughout the evening guests can relax and enjoy the classic movie Casablanca. This festival is our Club’s thank you, for those who support the Danville/Sycamore Valley Rotary Foundation with a donation of $40 or more.   Supporters will leave this event with the lasting satisfaction that their entire donation will support the community and international service projects of the Danville/Sycamore Valley Rotary Foundation.  Last year’s event raised nearly $70,000 and was attended by about 800 supporters.

Live entertainment will feature the Kathy Blackburn, jazzest, singing songs from the movie Casablanca, SRVHS  Jazz Band and vocal groups. The auction will not include any of the lovely cars at the Blackhawk Auto Museum, but you will still have an opportunity to admire their favorites, from behind the velvet rope.

Proceeds will fund projects, including:  Special Olympics, CASA Youth-to Youth Conference, the construction of Veteran’s Memorial Building, Discovery Counseling Center, Youth homes for Girls, the Third Grade Literacy Project, East Bay Stand Down for Veterans, The Wheelchair Foundation and international projects, including polio eradication, clean water projects, hearing aids and cleft palate surgeries for children, medical services in impoverished areas and many, many more worthwhile projects. Please join us for a fun filled evening with the hottest invitation in town!

Monte Vista Interact Club Committed to Community Service 0

When the officers of the Monte Vista High School Interact Club learned that food donations to the Contra Costa Food Bank had fallen off drastically after the holidays, they decided they needed to help. They asked Food Bank volunteer coordinator Joan Thomassini for 18 food barrels to be brought to the school, and club members distributed them to classrooms around the campus. When she called after the Food Bank had collected the barrels, she asked, “Are you sitting down?!?” In only a few weeks they had collected over 2500 pounds of food!

This active service club, sponsored and supported by the Rotary Club of Alamo, has spearheaded at least 2 major service projects a month since the beginning of the school year. They began the year collecting backpacks filled with school supplies for needy students in Contra Costa County. Additional collections included warm coats for the homeless, Halloween costumes for Bay Area Crisis Nursery toddlers, handwritten holiday cards and gifts for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the “adoption” of 80 children from the Crisis Nursery for whom they bought holiday presents and clothing. The club held a “Hoop-a-thon” last month, shooting baskets to raise money for HydrAid, an Interact/ Rotary-sponsored project to provide sand filters for clean water to villages in underdeveloped parts of Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Still ahead are projects to raise more money for this water-purification project, sorting food for the Food Bank, and serving meals to seniors.

This is certainly a caring, committed group of teens!

Women in Rotary RITV Podcast Episode 2 0

Candy Pierce and Laura Day: Once upon a time, Rotary was for men only; but that time was long, long ago! Listen in now as two of the most powerful, influential, and industrious local female Rotarians, Past District Govenor Candy Pierce and District Govenor Nominee Laura Day, describe the ins and outs of Rotary, from the female perspective. PR Chair Bill Randall chats with Candy and Laura about all aspects of women’s involvement in Rotary, the history, the accomplishments, the promises and the opportunities, locally, nationally, and internationally. Is Rotary an “equal opportunity” organization? Do “Romeos” still hold sway? How do modern women balance home, family, work, and Rotary and still remain sane? Give a listen to the comments, ideas, and dreams of these two extraordinary women and learn what strides Rotary has made and continues to make toward gender neutrality. As Laura said,

“It’s not necessarily your father’s Rotary club anymore, because it might be your mother’s Rotary club as well!”

Candy and Laura rock!
