ENJOY THE CLASSICS 0

Danville, CA, – Enjoy The Classics October 22nd, 2011 … So what is this Event all About?  Within the Club, it is commonly referred to as Scotch & Cigar which leads to connotations of a smoke filled room with devout scotch-soaked inebriants…  Quite the contrary… It is San Ramon Valley Rotary Club’s annual classy black tie optional event that provides us an opportunity to share some great times with the community and fellow Rotarians.

It is an event that is just as much oriented to couples as it is to great friends getting together.  It is held each year at the Crow Canyon Country Club in Danville CA with socializing starting at 6:00 PM.  Be sure and arrive on time as we start the evening early announced by our favorite bagpiper.

The scotch whiskey is exhibited and presented in a great format by world renowned whisky master, Steve Beal.  Last year, he exhibited premium Johnnie Walker greats and more from the Diageo brands.  He introduced us to the Johnnie Walker. Walk! .  The previous year he took us on a tour of the classic regions of Scotland …. From the smoky peat tastes to classic smoothes.   This year, we will further our knowledge of good Scotch Whiskey and also have a great presentation on the backgrounds and types of cigars.

Raffine Chocolates will sponsor the chocolate tasting led by our fellow Rotarian, Mona Keady, of the Danville/Sycamore Club.  She will provide a presentation of handmade chocolates for sampling which will also be paired with particular Scotches.  So, if you heart isn’t into the scotch nor the cigars, you will be able to still enjoy a fine dinner and participate in the chocolate sampling.

And Be Prepared.  Since this is a Rotary event, we will have our great live and silent auction again that allows us to continue our work in the community.  Proceeds of the auction fund the annual Bill Gregory Scholarship awards. This is a special scholarship program for local high school seniors who have distinguished themselves in community service.

Ticket sales have been extremely brisk this year so we recommend you don’t wait.  Contact your favorite San Ramon Valley Rotarian to sit with them, visit our website at www.sanramonvalleyrotary.com or email us at EnjoyTheClassics@sanramonvalleyrotary.com

Alamo Rotary Club to Donate Proceeds to Local School Music Programs as well as the Greater Alamo Community and Rotary International Projects

Alamo, CA, – The Alamo Music and Wine Festival is an annual community celebration benefiting, in part, our schools’ music programs while providing a variety of activities for the entire family. This 29th annual Rotary event will be held Saturday, September 10th from Noon to 11:00 P.M. at the Alamo Plaza in Alamo.

Headlining this event again will be the fabulous “Cruise Tones”, so well received over the last several years.  This talented group will play a wide variety of songs from the late 50’s to the hits of today – perfect for dancing under the stars. Additionally, school music groups will perform starting in the afternoon.

The day will be filled with many activities for the entire family.  Food, games, and local business booths will be set up throughout the festival area.  Kids will enjoy the play zone.  Our most popular feature for the youth – the Rock Climbing Wall – will again be there!

This year, dinner tickets will be only $15.00 each. These tickets will be good for a dinner from one of several excellent area restaurants: Forli’s, Faz, Maggie-Rays and Don Jose’s.  The Alamo Rotary will also have a booth offering gourmet hot dogs, burgers, and chips at very affordable prices.

In Addition, the Festival will feature wines from two outstanding  California wineries: Cline Cellars and Jacuzzi Winery.  Visitors may purchase commemorative wine glasses at the event. Soft drinks, beer, and water will also be available.

Alamo Citizen of the Year: Around 7:15 P.M., The Alamo Rotary will present its annual Citizen of the Year award.  This individual is selected among many local nominees who epitomize active involvement in community affairs and projects.  Last year’s winner was Vicki Koc.  Other past award winners include Alisa Corstophine, Greg Schuyler, Deputy Rick James, Claudia Waldron and Bruce Marhenke, to name a few.

Festival Goals: The Alamo Music Festival is first and foremost a fund raising event with the proceeds donated to assist music education at the following schools:  Alamo Elementary, Rancho Romero Elementary, Stone Valley Middle School, Monte Vista High School, San Ramon Valley High School and Lucille Mauzy School.  According to Don Morton, Festival Sponsor Chairman, “over $40,000 was raised at last year’s Festival.  Much of this money came from very generous local sponsors”.

10 Days left to provide donations for Ludoteca de Cumbres 0

Melanie, Debbie, and Rafael Plancarte from the Santa Catarina Rotary Club, MexicoCurrent President Melanie and Past President Debbie are taking a trip to Monterrey Mexico to visit some of the Matching Grant projects the Danville/Sycamore Valley Rotary Club helped fund as a result of their trip in 2008.

They will be visiting Ludoteca de Cumbres, an after school program in a distressed neighborhood in Santa Catarina. Danville/Sycamore was the lead club along with the Santa Catarina Rotary Club in Mexico.  Danville and Lafayette Rotary Clubs also contributed, as well as a match from Rotary International, in providing $30,000 in computers, desks, and play areas.

Debbie and Melanie plan to bring items that the children can use, such as school supplies (notebooks, pens, pencils, colored books, scizzors), as well as tolietry items (Toothpaste, toothbrushes, hair brushes, soap, and lotion) and small stuffed animals.

Anyone who is willing to donate these items please contact Melanie by February 20th, 2011. If you’d prefer to make a cash donation you can also do so here. Any donations received between now and 2/20/2011 will go to this effort, otherwise 100% will go to other worthy causes.

RotaCare Pittsburg Free Medical Clinic To Open Wednesday, February 9, 2011 0

RotaCare Pittsburg Free Medical Clinic at St. Vincent de Paul, 2210 Gladstone Drive, Pittsburg, is scheduled to open on Wednesday, February 9, 2011 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. It will then be open weekly on Wednesdays during the same times. Appointments can be made on Wednesdays from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. by calling 925-439-2009. Walk-ins will also be seen, but on a first come first serve basis.

RotaCare Pittsburg’s mission is to bring free medical care for relief of pain and suffering to those who have the most need and the least access to medical care.

The clinic, developed by St. Vincent de Paul of Contra Costa County, is sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of Alamo and Pittsburg, and co-sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of Antioch, Brentwood, Danville, Danville-Sycamore, Delta-Antioch, Dougherty Valley, San Ramon, and San Ramon Valley. As an Urgent Care/Primary Care Clinic, it will be providing quality, all-volunteer non-emergency medical care for adults with acute or chronic conditions who are uninsured or unable to pay for healthcare.

Services will include the treatment of diabetes, asthma, hypertension, cough, cold, flu or sore throat, minor lacerations, wound care, allergies, sinusitis, ear infections, urinary tract infections, sprains or muscle strains, headache/backache, and rashes, poison oak, minor skin infections and burns, mild stomach aches and prescription refills

Unemployment is 18%+ in East Contra Costa County, higher than the rest of the Bay Area. 25 % of Americans (according to NPR) do not have Health Insurance, and Heart disease is the foremost cause of death in Contra Costa County. Additionally, there are approximately 400,000 individuals diagnosed with diabetes in Contra Costa County. Prevalence is highest among Whites (37.8%) and Latinos (26.5%). There is a rapid increase in obesity with two- thirds of Contra Costa adults either overweight or obese.

A primary focus of the education/treatment will be in the areas of Diabetes/Asthma/Hypertension/ Obesity, as the low-income and uninsured are populations that are known to suffer disproportionately from these chronic conditions. Monthly Diabetes classes are being planned and will be offered in English and Spanish. Early intervention programs for pre-diabetes patients will also be implemented.

Funding for the Clinic to date has been made possible by the Keller Canyon Mitigation Fund, Bank of American Charitable Foundation, The Carl Gellert and Celia Berta Gellert Foundation, and the Kaiser Permanente Diablo Area Community Benefit Grants Program.

2 Events on the Polio Eradication Effort that All Rotarians Should Watch 1

We are fortunate as Rotarians and Humanitarians to have played a significant role in the polio eradication efforts. The global health community including Rotary International and the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation have committed over $630 Million dollars in recent years in an effort to eradicate polio from our planet. There are two events coming up this weekend that are likely to be of interest to Rotarians everywhere.

Diane Sawyer Polio Immunization Trip Report on World News Tonight

This Friday, January 28, 2011, ABC World News Tonight with Diane Sawyer will report on an polio immunization trip last November to India.  Trip participant and local Rotarian PDG Brad Howard notes that ABC has its own Global Health campaign website.  So check your local listings, mark your calendars, set up those recorders, and tell all your friends and fellow Rotarians to watch.

Bill Gates at International Assembly

Polio Eradication and the Power of Vaccines Webcast featuring Bill Gates, Diane Sawyer, David Oshinsky and a panel of exports

To launch Bill Gates’ 3rd annual letter, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation invites you to join a conversation about the extraordinary progress in the fight to eradicate polio and the enormous lifesaving potential of vaccines.

Thanks to a global childhood immunization effort, polio has been reduced by 99% and we are on the cusp of eradicating only the second disease in history. This presents a powerful case for the value of vaccines.

Unique Perspectives
Bill Gates will join global leaders to discuss what the past can teach us about protecting children around the world from polio and other vaccine-preventable diseases. The event will be moderated by ABC World News anchor Diane Sawyer, and speakers include:

  • Dr. David Oshinsky, Pulitzer Prize-winning author, “Polio: An American Story”
  • Professor Helen Rees, University of Witwatersrand, South Africa; and Chair, WHO’s Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization
  • Dr. Ciro de Quadros, Executive Vice President, Sabin Vaccine Institute

Panelists will discuss why now is the time to rid the world of polio and ensure all children have access to lifesaving vaccines. No child deserves to face the threat of preventable disease, whether it’s polio, measles, or pneumonia.

To watch the live webcast, please visit www.gatesfoundation.org on Monday, January 31 at 9:30 a.m. ET. It will also be available on demand following the event.
