DSVR introduces Home Maintenance for the Elderly to the San Ramon Valley 0

Rotary HOME Team Logo

HARD TO REACH LIGHT BULB?

LEAKY FAUCET?

RUNNING TOILET?

SMOKE DETECTOR BATTERIES “NEED CHANGING?”

SCREEN DOOR WON’T CLOSE?

The Danville/Sycamore Valley Rotary Club is excited to announce the launch of a new program called Rotary HOME (Home Maintenance for the Elderly) Team, which will be providing a FREE basic household repair service for Seniors in the local community. This program was originated by the Lamorinda Sunrise Rotary Club, and is a partnership with the Episcopal Senior Communities (ESC).

The Problem:

Seniors have a difficult time with many common household repairs due to their physical condition or safety issues. In some cases the cost of hiring a handyman or contractor to perform minor repairs is prohibitive, and there may not be any family able or willing to assist. Some of the repairs or maintenance items include:

Replacing light bulbs in hard to reach areas (ceilings, ovens, refrigerators), replacing batteries in smoke alarms (usually on a ceiling), leaking faucets, toilet tank malfunctions, squeaky doors and windows, damaged or torn screens, blown fuses or GFI resets, loose handles or drawer pulls, water heater temperature adjustments, etc.

The Solution:

Rotary wishes to identify seniors in the community who need assistance and to coordinate volunteer Rotarians to visit and make the necessary repairs at no cost to the senior.

With just a phone call or email seniors can request a 2-3 person team of Rotarians to stop by on a Saturday morning to handle the necessary maintenance issue. You’ll be asked for your name, address and phone number, along with a description of the maintenance need. Rotary will coordinate the teams and send them to you on a specific date. If your need is urgent we will do our best to accommodate you, but cannot promise a speedy reply.

When the Rotary HOME Team arrives they will introduce themselves and provide identification. They will review your request with you and ask you to sign a simple liability waiver. They will then determine what is necessary and complete the item(s). In the event the item needs additional expertise or is over and above the scope of our capabilities, Rotary will forward your name to the Episcopal Senior Communities’ senior service coordinator, who will attempt to assist you.

Upon completion of the maintenance item, the Rotary HOME Team will leave behind additional information that you might find helpful for other needs. Of course we would also like to hear from you about the service and we welcome your comments.

If interested in scheduling a visit, please contact Ruth Robeson with the ESC at 925-956-7363, or email your information to rotaryhometeam@hotmail.com.

Trust in Education Updates Danville Sycamore on Afghanistan Efforts 0

Budd MacKenzie - Trust in EducationHaving Budd MacKenzie speak to us about Trust in Education is almost an annual event. We have been supporting TIE for several years, and did so again this year with a donation.

Budd founded TIE in 2004, and has gone to Afghanistan twice a year for six years. He started by raising funds to build a school. But as he became more involved, his mission expanded. These are just a few of the projects.

Several years ago, local school children asked Budd where the play ground equipment was, and now TIE funds playground equipment, such as swings, slide, jungle jims, and soccer field goal posts. And even athletic shoes and shin guards after seeing a photo of girls playing in sandals.

Playground Equipment Sponsored by TIE

In 2009, Budd was approached by Zoira, a young lady born in Afghanistan but who had been raised in California. After a visit back to her hometown in Farza, she was inspired to build a girl’s school. There was already one for boy’s. The new school will be 2 stories with more than 10 classrooms.

After receiving approvals from the Ministry of Education, they had a groundbreaking ceremony in 2010. The village men are volunteering their services and started digging the foundation immediately. They are on their way, with disbursements of materials only given after they have shown that progress has been made. TIE hopes to have the school completed at the end of 2011.

What is it like to be a Rotary Club President? 0

What’s harder, being the President of the USA or being the president of your local Rotary club?  Well, discounting the various perks of the former, the two jobs can seem very similar.  ”Herding cats and cutting compromises all while maintaining a positive spin and saving the world on a daily basis!”  Listen in as the presidents of our 6 local Rotary clubs discuss the in’s and out’s of their year “in charge”, nominally at least, of these completely autonomous groups of  independent thinkers and go-getters known as our local Rotary clubs.

10 Days left to provide donations for Ludoteca de Cumbres 0

Melanie, Debbie, and Rafael Plancarte from the Santa Catarina Rotary Club, MexicoCurrent President Melanie and Past President Debbie are taking a trip to Monterrey Mexico to visit some of the Matching Grant projects the Danville/Sycamore Valley Rotary Club helped fund as a result of their trip in 2008.

They will be visiting Ludoteca de Cumbres, an after school program in a distressed neighborhood in Santa Catarina. Danville/Sycamore was the lead club along with the Santa Catarina Rotary Club in Mexico.  Danville and Lafayette Rotary Clubs also contributed, as well as a match from Rotary International, in providing $30,000 in computers, desks, and play areas.

Debbie and Melanie plan to bring items that the children can use, such as school supplies (notebooks, pens, pencils, colored books, scizzors), as well as tolietry items (Toothpaste, toothbrushes, hair brushes, soap, and lotion) and small stuffed animals.

Anyone who is willing to donate these items please contact Melanie by February 20th, 2011. If you’d prefer to make a cash donation you can also do so here. Any donations received between now and 2/20/2011 will go to this effort, otherwise 100% will go to other worthy causes.

RotaCare Pittsburg Free Medical Clinic To Open Wednesday, February 9, 2011 0

RotaCare Pittsburg Free Medical Clinic at St. Vincent de Paul, 2210 Gladstone Drive, Pittsburg, is scheduled to open on Wednesday, February 9, 2011 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. It will then be open weekly on Wednesdays during the same times. Appointments can be made on Wednesdays from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. by calling 925-439-2009. Walk-ins will also be seen, but on a first come first serve basis.

RotaCare Pittsburg’s mission is to bring free medical care for relief of pain and suffering to those who have the most need and the least access to medical care.

The clinic, developed by St. Vincent de Paul of Contra Costa County, is sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of Alamo and Pittsburg, and co-sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of Antioch, Brentwood, Danville, Danville-Sycamore, Delta-Antioch, Dougherty Valley, San Ramon, and San Ramon Valley. As an Urgent Care/Primary Care Clinic, it will be providing quality, all-volunteer non-emergency medical care for adults with acute or chronic conditions who are uninsured or unable to pay for healthcare.

Services will include the treatment of diabetes, asthma, hypertension, cough, cold, flu or sore throat, minor lacerations, wound care, allergies, sinusitis, ear infections, urinary tract infections, sprains or muscle strains, headache/backache, and rashes, poison oak, minor skin infections and burns, mild stomach aches and prescription refills

Unemployment is 18%+ in East Contra Costa County, higher than the rest of the Bay Area. 25 % of Americans (according to NPR) do not have Health Insurance, and Heart disease is the foremost cause of death in Contra Costa County. Additionally, there are approximately 400,000 individuals diagnosed with diabetes in Contra Costa County. Prevalence is highest among Whites (37.8%) and Latinos (26.5%). There is a rapid increase in obesity with two- thirds of Contra Costa adults either overweight or obese.

A primary focus of the education/treatment will be in the areas of Diabetes/Asthma/Hypertension/ Obesity, as the low-income and uninsured are populations that are known to suffer disproportionately from these chronic conditions. Monthly Diabetes classes are being planned and will be offered in English and Spanish. Early intervention programs for pre-diabetes patients will also be implemented.

Funding for the Clinic to date has been made possible by the Keller Canyon Mitigation Fund, Bank of American Charitable Foundation, The Carl Gellert and Celia Berta Gellert Foundation, and the Kaiser Permanente Diablo Area Community Benefit Grants Program.

Mary Tuttle of the Danville/Sycamore Rotary Gains Special Recognition 0

Maritza Jefferson-Gregory, Executive Director of Paradise Adolescent Homes (PAH), presented Mary with a ‘Special Recognition Award’. This honor is to recognize Mary’s leadership in involving our club in giving the girls in PAH homes in San Ramon suitcases, backpacks, pillows, lock box, and other items that would make their stay in a foster home more pleasant. Mary started this project about six years ago at the recommendation of Peggy Ebersole, wife of Bruce and a teacher at Del Amigo High School. The mission of PAH is to serve the needs of at-risked teenage girls in home setting, and give them the tools to transition to adulthood.
Mary Tuttle Special Recognition
Mary and Community Services Committee also organized a Pre-Thanksgiving dinner at Marie Calendars this last Thursday evening. The picture below are of several of the girls enjoying themselves at dinner.
